About the ride
Follow the architectural legacy of Geoffrey Bawa on a private journey connecting Colombo with the lush landscapes of Bentota.
Begin at Number 11, Bawa’s former home in Colombo and one of the most personal expressions of his design philosophy. Explore the house on an official guided visit and discover how courtyards, changing light, local materials, art and carefully framed views transform a compact urban property into a sequence of intimate spaces. The Geoffrey Bawa Trust describes Number 11 as a physical expression of the creativity surrounding Bawa and an example of what he called “good Sri Lankan architecture.
Continue to Seema Malaka, a serene meditation pavilion on Beira Lake where Bawa’s ideas can be experienced in a public religious setting. Then leave Colombo and travel south toward Bentota for the highlight of the day: Lunuganga, Bawa’s country estate. During the official garden tour, walk through decades of architectural and landscape experimentation, where terraces, pavilions, sculpture, water and tropical vegetation were shaped into one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive designed environments. The Geoffrey Bawa Trust currently offers guided visits to Lunuganga every day.
With private door-to-door transportation throughout the day, the experience connects three very different expressions of Bawa’s work — intimate home, public architecture and landscape — into one complete story of Tropical Modernism.
Suggested Itinerary
Begin your experience at
1Geoffrey Bawa Number 11, where an official guided tour introduces you to the architect’s own home and the intimate courtyards, passages, artworks and carefully controlled light that defined his approach to residential design.
Continue to
2Seema Malaka Temple, where a series of pavilions set over the lake demonstrate how modern architecture, Buddhist tradition and tropical surroundings can work together in a calm public space.
Then travel south toward Bentota and arrive at
3Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where an official guided walk through gardens and architectural spaces reveals how landscape became just as important to Bawa’s work as the buildings themselves.
Take time to experience the changing views, pavilions, sculpture and tropical vegetation before meeting your driver for the journey back to Colombo.
At the end of your sightseeing ride, your friendly Welcome Driver will drop you off at your accommodation.
This experience is ideal for architecture, design and landscape lovers who want to go beyond Sri Lanka’s traditional monuments and explore the work of one of Asia’s most influential modern architects.
