Day Trip From Rome to Tuscany

Once you arrive in Siena you will be taken into the Historic Centre, which has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, where you can disembark your vehicle and stretch out your legs after the journey from Rome. One of the first spots you will visit is Siena’s Piazza del Campo, the most central and historically important Piazza in the city. Piazza del Campo is the heart of Siena, its magnificent paving attracts both tourists and locals to sit and enjoy a picnic in the summer, and it's numbered cafés provide the perfect spot to warm up in the winter. In the square, you can also admire the Fonte Gaia, the largest fountain in the city, or visit the Civic Museum, which houses several masterpieces from Sienese artists. 

The next stop will be the Duomo, which lies in a Piazza just above the Piazza del Campo. This stunning gothic building is filled with treasures from many of Italy’s most famous artists, and unlike the Cathedral in Florence, the interior of Siena’s Duomo is breathtakingly beautiful. However, if you don’t want to spend too much time in this place, the exterior is also extremely impressive. The walls of the Duomo are lavishly decorated in alternating white and black marble stripes, black and white being the symbolic colors of Siena.

Your driver will then take you to a wonderful little town called San Gimignano, where you can marvel at the giant 13th-century walls that encircle the city and explore the Piazza della Cisterna. However, the feature this town is most famous for is its gigantic towers. In the medieval period, merchant families would try to outbuild their neighbors, making their houses larger and more splendid, in a lavish display of power and wealth. At the peak of its fashion, San Gimignano boasted a whopping 72 of these towers, however, today only 15 remains. This is why the historic center of San Gimignano is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Throughout the day your driver will show you different wineries and wine cellars, whilst giving you an in-depth commentary on each, so at a time of your choosing, you can take a break from the history of Italy, and enjoy a wine tasting experience. We recommend trying the Brunello di Montalcino, classed as one of the best wines in the region, if not Italy. Pairing your wine tasting with the local cheeses and hams is the perfect way to enjoy a light lunch, before continuing with your tour of the Tuscan countryside. 

Once you have seen the historical sites, and enjoyed the most delicious wines in the region, you will once again board your private Welcome car, enjoy the relaxing ride back to Rome, and be dropped off at your accommodation.
