Vieil Avignon
A vibrant square lined with cafés, theaters, and the 14th-century clock tower. This is the natural entry point into Avignon’s old town, where elegant façades and lively terraces give you an instant sense of the city’s energy.
Palais des Papes
Europe’s largest Gothic palace, once the seat of the papacy in the 14th century. Its battlements and vast courtyards dominate the skyline, while interiors (ticketed) reveal frescoes and cavernous halls that tell the story of Avignon’s global importance.
Rocher des Doms Belvedere
A landscaped hilltop garden just behind the palace, offering panoramic views over the Rhône, Mont Ventoux, and the surrounding countryside. It’s also a peaceful pause in the city, with shaded benches and fountains.
Pont Saint-Bénézet
The half-bridge immortalized in song reaches partway across the Rhône. Walking on the surviving arches gives one of Avignon’s most iconic perspectives: palace and ramparts above, river flowing below.

Your journey begins with a direct run north from Marseille to 1Vieil Avignon, Avignon’s lively central square. Cafés spill out onto the pavement, the Town Hall and clock tower add an elegant frame, and street performers often keep the atmosphere buzzing. From here you step naturally toward 2Palais des Papes , the immense papal palace that dominates the skyline. Whether you admire the Gothic façades from the vast square or explore courtyards and chapels inside, the sense of history is overwhelming.
Climbing just a little higher, you reach 3Rocher des Doms Belvedere, landscaped gardens with a belvedere that gives sweeping views of the Rhône, the bridge below, and Mont Ventoux on a clear day. It’s the city’s natural balcony, perfect for wide photos. Back down by the river, 4Pont Saint-Bénézet stretches partway across the Rhône the famous Pont d’Avignon. Standing on its surviving arches, you get the classic angle back toward the palace and fortified walls.
In the afternoon the ride continues west to 5Pont du Gard, the Pont du Gard. Here three tiers of limestone arches stride the Gardon River in breathtaking scale. Broad riverside paths and lookouts allow you to take in the aqueduct from every angle, and the surrounding natural setting makes it as peaceful as it is monumental. After time to explore and capture photos, your driver returns you comfortably to Marseille.
