Suggested Itinerary

Begin your ride from 1Heraklion City, settling into a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle as you travel south through the fertile Messara plain.

Your first stop is 2Gortys, the ancient capital of Roman Crete and Cyrenaica. Wander among the impressive ruins spanning Doric, Roman, and Byzantine periods, including the amphitheater and the Basilica of Saint Titus. This extraordinary site is home to the Gortyn Code, the longest preserved legal inscription in Europe, offering a fascinating insight into ancient law and society. Gortyn is also deeply connected to early Christianity, linked to the Apostle Paul, Saint Titus, and the Holy Ten Martyrs.

Continue to 3Phaistos, the archaeological site of Phaistos, Crete’s second-largest Minoan palace. Set on a table-top hill, the site offers sweeping views over the Messara plain, the Ida Mountains, the Asteroussia range, and even the Lassithi massif. Explore the palace remains and learn about the mysterious Phaistos Disk, a spiral-inscribed artifact that still puzzles archaeologists today.

Your journey then heads south to the Libyan Sea and the coastal village of 4Matala. Once a small fishing village, Matala is famous for its crystal-clear waters and rock-cut caves carved into the cliffs. These caves were used in prehistoric times and later became home to free-spirited travelers during the 1960s and ’70s. Enjoy time to swim, relax on the beach, have lunch at a seaside taverna, and walk up to the iconic caves overlooking the bay.
