About the ride
Considered one of the most relevant cities in Lombardy, Varese is an elegant town located roughly 55 km away from Milan. This pedestrian city center offers countless options, from shopping to fine dining, as well as a rich events' program. Palazzo Estense, which used to be the town hall, is a great example of the Baroque architecture. The city is surrounded by beautiful villas which can be admired while strolling towards the heights over the city.
Lake Varese and Cagiva factory
Only a few people know that, besides the most famous Lombard lakes, a small, intimate water basin lies close to the city of Varese: its eponymous lake. Swimming in the lake is prohibited, but it is possible to sunbathe in summer or do a little canoeing or rowing competitions. While strolling near the shores of Lake Varese, passionate bikers can discover a bit of motoring history at the nearby Cagiva factory. The biking company, which has the same owners as the MV Agusta brand, features models of motorbikes in the city of Schiranna. The factory also boasts a dedicated museum, displaying old models of motorbikes up to the latest models and prototypes, offering highlights of the evolution of the brand and the motoring sector.
Villa Panza and its art collections
One of the villas in Varese needs particular attention: the stunning complex of Villa Panza, a beautiful example of the splendor of the 18th century. Former home to Count Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, from which the dwelling takes its name, it is now a heritage protected by FAI (Italy’s National Trust) and hosts one of the most important collections of contemporary art in Northern Italy. A stopover to the villa not only is advised but also offers visitors a chance to be delighted by a rich Italianate garden and by the dwelling’s inner spaces, transformed and redesigned under the Count’s request to fulfill his passion for art and need to share his personal collection with external visitors.
