Your journey may begin in Krems, a picturesque town marking the eastern gateway of the Wachau Valley. Stroll through its historic Old Town, pass the impressive Steiner Tor, and experience the atmosphere of a region shaped by centuries of winemaking. Krems is surrounded by charming wine villages, fortresses, and castles, making it an ideal place to pause at a traditional tavern and enjoy a regional meal paired with the Wachau’s renowned wines.

Continue to Melk Abbey, a magnificent Benedictine monastery dramatically overlooking the Danube River. This iconic Baroque masterpiece is one of Austria’s most celebrated landmarks. Admire its ornate façade, explore the impressive grounds, and take in sweeping views over the river and surrounding countryside.

Next, visit Dürnstein, one of the most romantic villages in the Wachau Valley. Rising above the town are the ruins of Dürnstein Castle, where King Richard the Lionheart of England was famously imprisoned in the 12th century. The castle ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into medieval history along with panoramic views across the Danube and terraced vineyards below.

From April to October, you may also choose to include a Danube River cruise, with departures available from Krems, Melk, and nearby villages. Cruising along the river provides a unique perspective on the Wachau’s dramatic landscapes, medieval towns, castle ruins, and vineyard-covered hillsides.
