Lake Marathon

In the historic municipality of Marathon 28 km from the center of Athens, lies the dam of the artificial Marathon lake.

Marathon Tomb

This is where the dead from the Battle of Marathon is buried. Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC, during the first Persian invasion of Greece.

Archeological Museum

The museum mainly houses findings originating from the Battle of Marathon and from the Egyptian temple built nearby.

About the ride

Your day will begin with a personal pickup by your English-speaking driver from your hotel or apartment in Athens. After a quick introduction, you will board your private ride and begin a 45 km journey from Athens to Marathon - the town where the famous Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC.

The drive will take you to 2Lake Marathon, the perfect place to explore or have a swim. This artificial lake, located in the north-eastern part of Greece, had been providing water supply to Athens from 1931 to 1959. Then, you will visit the 3Marathon Tomb, the monument devoted to 192 Greeks who defeated a huge cavalry of Persians in the Battle of Marathon. As the legend tells, a messenger had to run approximately 40 km from the battlefield to Athens just to announce the defeat of the Persians. Right after the run, the messenger died from exhaustion and his legendary run became the historical ground for the marathon race. After you spend your time at this historical site, you will finish the trip at the 5Marathon Run Museum where you will see the history of Olympic Marathons and an exclusive sporting collection dating back to 1896.

At the end of your ride, your friendly driver will drop you off at your accommodation.

Can I customize the tour based on my needs?

What happens after I book?

Will there be an official tour guide?

An official tour guide is not included because the overall experience is centered around the driver and the local’s perspective. Although the drivers are very knowledgeable regarding the points of visit, at no point can they be compared with a licensed tour guide who can give more in-depth information regarding historical facts and information. If you would like to include an official tour guide in the experience please let us know via email after the booking is completed.

Can i book my pickup from anywhere?

Hey there! Just a quick note: our transfer pickups are set within the city (usually from a Hotel or residential address) to make your journey smoother. But no sweat! If you're arriving at an airport or port, you can book a transfer to the city center and share your transfer number with our support team so that we can combine the two, and we'll ensure a seamless transition to your destination so that you can start a great sightseeing ride.
